Pause. Quiet your mind, take a slow breath in and out. Stay in this moment.

Passage

Proverbs 3:5–6

Reading & Reflection

Proverbs 3:5-6 are among the most quoted and loved verses in the entire book of Proverbs. On the surface, the scripture seems simple, but it has meaningful depth and huge implications if we are willing to listen and seek.

Most of Proverbs was written by King Solomon, a man often considered one of the wisest men to ever live. This is a father and leader of many years, capturing his life’s wisdom and urging people not to trust in human reason alone but in God’s wisdom. What’s the difference?

This type of trust is wholehearted—it leaves no room for partial surrender. To “depend” or “lean” is to put your weight on something you trust to hold it, in other words, trusting to do what it says it will do. What do we often trust to hold us? Do you trust your own certainty of being right? Or your reputation, or your finances, or your plans, or your opinions to guide you?

The promise is clear: God will make our paths straight. That doesn’t mean easy or without challenge, but it does mean right, good and purposeful. He knows the best way forward when we do not. Our role is to seek first and surrender.

This passage invites us to prepare our hearts by practicing trust. Wisdom is not about mastering all the answers but about leaning on the One who holds them. The more we release control, the straighter and more meaningful the path becomes.

The two verses that follow hold a promise:

Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom.
Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil.
Then you will have healing for your body
and strength for your bones.

You will find healing. You will find strength.

What parts of life do you need healing and strength today?

Bottom line: Leaning on our own understanding limits us to what we can see—trusting Him leads us to what only He can do.

Morning Prayer

Lord, today I want to trust You with all my heart and mind, I give You everyone and everything. Even if I don’t feel it, I choose it. Jesus, you are in control, teach me your ways, and give me ears to hear your voice.

Evening Prayer

Father, I end this day with gratitude for the breath in my lungs. I declare my dependence on You for each breath, and I want to learn Your ways. Reveal to me where I’m still trusting in my own understanding over your will.

Let me see the world the way you see it, Lord. Teach me to turn away from evil by and turn toward you, let me become the person you’ve created me to be. Forgive me for the ways I let control get in the way of my relationship with you and with others, I surrender all of me to you. Bring healing and strength to me and to our church, in Jesus Holy name. Amen
