Hip 2 B Holy Airs Tonight on Global

Hey friends…so we're all a bit excited and (honestly) a bit nervous as Hip 2B Holy, a Kevin Newman documentary, airs nationally tonight at 10:00 on Global.

The documentary tracks a number of churches that are making a difference with the younger generation and are growing, and Connexus is one of the churches they are looking at.  We haven't seen a preview copy, so we'll be tuning in tonight with everyone else.

Here's some background before you watching tonight.  Kevin Newman and the show's producer, Karen Pinker, gave a great interview on it recently.   The Globe and Mail ran a piece on the documentary last week (and called my sermons "gentle"…huh?).  100 Huntley Street did a feature piece last week, and media outlets like the Toronto StarVancouver Sun, the Windsor Star are talking about it.

We agreed to be part of the documentary for two reasons:
  • We wanted people to see a different face of the church.  Many people are interested in God, they just don't think the church can help.  We hope in some way, the documentary helps change people's minds about the relevance of church today.
  • We believe God can and will use it.  When our time on earth is done, most of us will wish we did more, not less, to share who and what Christ is.  If in some small way, this is part of that, we're thrilled.

So pray with us today and tonight, and let us know what you think.  We'll be watching at 10 tonight!

I am watching this documentry and did not know this church existed in Barrie. We had basically given up on Barrie Churches because we just did not fit. So excited to here about your church in the documentary. How do we find out when church services are.

    Thank you 🙂

The news clip is FABULOUS so far! I'm watching, quite by accident, and am so blessed at seeing what your church is accomplishing. I live in Edmonton and have teens aged 18-20. They are 'sort of' connected to a church and my desire is that they will choose something like what you provide. Jimmy Pattison said it right when he said in the documentary 'we don't sell soap today like we sold soap 25 years ago'. We need to get on with the times and meet people right where they are. God bless you in Barrie….I pray that the movement will move west!!!!

We're gonna be coming to Ontario this summer for a vacation and I've already decided since we are not staying very far from Barrie we are gonna come check out Connexus. We have a similar church here in town called The Connection. Keep praising the Lord!!

Hi, I just finished posting my thoughts on Hip 2B Holy on my blog struckbyenlightning.wordpress.com …in case you're curious to hear an atheist's thoughts on the show. I found your blog when I was trying to find out what the pastor's name was that was featured in the show, I'm not sure I got it right so please correct me if I'm wrong! Somehow I missed it while I was watching. Thanks in advance 🙂

Yeah! It was great. But I forgot how much snow there was when we first started Connexus. LOL. I wish it had focused a bit more on what we are doing at Connexus – the great environments for kids of all ages, small groups, etc. but overall, it was good. I'm glad Carey mentioned that his sermons are apolitical – because they certainly are. And we've got enough to talk about with the bigger things God wants us to know: that he loves us all without needing to get into divisive politics on which various Connexus people would have a whole spectrum of different opinions. It was cool to see the Hip Hop dancing done by Nate. Can't see Carey doing that on stage. LOL. But you never know, I guess!

I watched the documentary on Global last night. I would definitely go to a church like yours. The traditional church has not made me feel uplifted.
I am suffering from spiritual starvation!

I tuned into the show last night and I was encouraged by your church! It was sweet to see the impact you guys have on your community and I would love to get involved in a church similar to Connexus. Your doing a great thing for God – and thats awesome : )
