Before You Begin
Pause. Quiet your mind, take a slow breath in and out. Stay in this moment.
Passage
Reading & Reflection
Jesus was on his way toward Jerusalem and along the way, He teaches through parables, moments of conversation, and miracles.
How often in our day-to-day life do we become like Martha? We run from one thing to the next, the days are too full to start the morning with Jesus, read our Bibles, or just talk with Him. Distractions happen so easily and keeps us from real intimacy with Him.
Could Jesus say this to you? “[your name, your name], you are worried and upset about many things…”
We’ve all been in Martha’s shoes, caught up in all-the-things but missing the necessary thing. Somewhere along the way, we stop making space for Jesus and forget our daily need for Him. Notice what Jesus says: Mary has chosen the one needed or necessary thing. It’s not that work, cleaning the house, getting the kids to school, or handling daily tasks don’t matter, but there is one thing that is worth concerning ourselves with, or that is necessary above all else: time at Jesus feet.
When we sit at Jesus feet, we see all things differently.
Jesus invites us to slow down and choose differently. He calls us to pause, to set aside the busyness, and simply be with Him. He’s not looking for perfection; He just wants our attention, our presence, and our surrender.
I often ask myself: if Jesus wanted to speak to me right now, would I be able to drop the distractions of my day and listen? Would I recognize what is truly necessary in this moment? Jesus invites us to come to Him daily—we just need to choose Him.
So I invite you to sit and do the necessary thing amidst the chaos, amidst confusion, amidst the to-do list, the noise of culture and politics. He’s inviting you to Himself. All we have to do is slow down, look and choose Him.
Bottom Line: The necessary thing is time spent with Jesus. Come sit at His feet.
Morning Prayer
Lord, I lay down the distractions in my life. Help me to stop and sit at Your feet.
Forgive me for the times I’ve let the busyness of life drown out Your voice, when I’ve chosen other things instead of You. Help me to choose You above everything else happening in the world. As we approach Sacred Homecoming, I pray that I would make time for You. That I would clear space in the midst of my busy schedule to simply be present with You, however that looks.
Evening Prayer
Jesus, thank You for being near today. Thank You that You are enough for me. I recognize my daily need for You, and I ask that You help me slow down, set aside distractions, and choose You. I need You, Jesus.
