If you’re exploring spirituality, you’ve likely encountered a variety of beliefs and practices—from astrology and meditation to crystals and energy healing. This mix of ideas, often called New Age spirituality, has become a significant part of Western culture over the past few decades. Its appeal is understandable: New Age beliefs offer personal freedom, individual empowerment, and a spiritual path centred on self-discovery. But while this path has its attractions, I’d like to make the case that following Jesus offers something different—and, ultimately, something deeper.
1. Move Your Search for God to Knowing God Personally
New Age spirituality often emphasizes seeking harmony with the universe and finding “the divine” within yourself. This can look like pursuing enlightenment through crystals, meditation, or even astrology. But this approach can feel like an endless journey, as if God is somewhere “out there,” waiting for us to uncover him in the beauty and mystery of the cosmos.
In contrast, Jesus offers a radically different perspective. In the scripture, Acts chapter 17, we see the apostle Paul engaging with people in ancient Athens who, like many today, were looking for God in every corner of their world. They even had an altar to an “unknown god,” as if to cover any spiritual bases they might have missed. Paul acknowledged their sincere search but introduced them to a profound truth: there’s no need to keep searching for a vague, mysterious god because the true God has made himself known through Jesus. Jesus didn’t remain distant but instead stepped into our world (John 1) so we could know God personally—not as a force or a mystical energy but as a loving Creator who cares about our lives and knows us personally (Psalm 139).
2. Move Beyond Your Limitations of Self-Reliance
New Age beliefs encourage us to find the answers within ourselves. Many New Age practices suggest that by connecting with our inner selves, we become our own source of guidance and even divinity. This can seem liberating; it means we would control our destiny. But this path also has its limitations. Relying solely on ourselves for meaning and purpose can feel like a heavy weight to bear—and it’s not a weight you were designed to carry.
Jesus’ message turns this idea on its head. Instead of asking us to depend solely on ourselves, He invites us into a relationship where we can rely on Him. He teaches that we’re not self-made or self-sustained; rather, we’re deeply loved by a God who has a purpose for us beyond our own understanding. Jesus offers a way of life that frees us from the pressure of being our own saviour or god, allowing us to find peace in a love that isn’t self-generated or conditional. (John 15:4-5, Matthew 11:28-30)
3. Move to a Truth Beyond Trends and Fads
Crystals and other New Age practices might bring comfort, but they’re often rooted in superstitions or cultural trends. They come and go, rising in popularity before eventually being replaced by the next spiritual craze. By contrast, following Jesus connects you to a faith that has endured for over two millennia. Billions of people have found meaning and transformation in Him—not because of a passing trend but because of the timeless truths He embodied and taught, and then proved to be true with a perfect life, his death on the cross, and his ressurection.
Jesus’ influence isn’t dependent on social trends or temporary cultural waves. His life, teachings, and resurrection have resonated through generations and transformed lives in every culture. What Jesus offers isn’t just a self-help technique or a path to temporary peace but an invitation to experience a lasting transformation, regardless of what spiritual trends may come and go.
4. Move to Freedom in Surrender Versus the Illusion of Control
One appeal of New Age spirituality is that it promises freedom to shape one’s spiritual path. You’re free to choose your practices, beliefs, and even the type of “god” you prefer. But there’s a subtle trap in this approach: when we place ourselves at the centre of our spiritual world, we risk becoming captive to our own limitations and desires.
Jesus offers something unique: true freedom that comes not from holding onto control but from letting it go. By surrendering our lives to Him, we’re invited into a freedom that isn’t bound by our own flaws or weaknesses. Jesus provides a way to live free (Galatians 5, Romans 8:1-2) from the need to constantly control our destiny, giving us peace in knowing that our lives are in the hands of a loving God who knows what’s best for us. Instead of making god in our image, we’re invited to become more like Him.
Why Consider Jesus?
You might be on a spiritual journey, wondering what’s true and what’s right for you. While the journey itself is valuable, it’s worth considering that God might have already made Himself known to us in the most personal way possible. Jesus claims that God isn’t hiding or waiting to be discovered through crystals or cosmic forces—He’s here, now, offering us the gift of a relationship with Him, forgiveness, and redemption. This invitation is unlike any other because it doesn’t depend on your achievements, your state of mind, or your ability to “unlock” divine mysteries.
Instead, Jesus offers a life of love, meaning, and purpose that transforms from the inside out. His path isn’t about achieving enlightenment or accessing hidden power; it’s about knowing the God who created you and being transformed by His love. In a world full of spiritual choices, following Jesus is the only path that truly brings the peace, purpose, and connection you’ve been searching for.
