Can You Follow Jesus and Still Live Your Own Way?
Plenty of people like Jesus. They admire His teaching on love, forgiveness, and grace. But when it comes to following Him, most of us want to set the terms. Yes to God, as long as it doesn’t touch our career, our money, our relationships, or our weekends.
In Week 1 of Christian-ish, Connexus Lead Pastor Jeff Brodie asks what happens when faith turns into a negotiation.
From Covenant to Contract
Jeff explains the difference between a covenant and a contract. A contract says, “Here’s what I owe you, and here’s what you owe me.” A covenant says, “I’m yours.” Christianity begins with God’s covenant promise in Jesus, and our faith is a response to His grace. But over time, many of us drift from a covenant we committed to into a contract we keep renegotiating.
Why Small Compromises Pull Us Away From God
Looking at Jesus’ letter to the church in Thyatira in Revelation 2, Jeff shows how a loving, growing church slowly made room for the things they didn’t want to give up. He shares a study on the slippery slope of compromise and explains why nobody crosses the line all at once. We slide it, one reasonable decision at a time.
One Question to Ask This Week
Jeff closes with a simple, honest question: Jesus, where am I negotiating with You? What has veto power over God in your life? And he reminds us that when we come back to Jesus, His love and forgiveness are complete.
