YouTube: From Reaction Clips to Deep Formation

YouTube has the potential to be the healthiest platform of them all. But only if it’s used intentionally. Otherwise, it becomes a long chain of reaction clips and autoplay drift — slowly shaping how we think without us noticing.

How YouTube’s Algorithm Learns

YouTube prioritizes:

  • Session length
  • What you watch next
  • Autoplay behavior

The last video you watch matters more than the first.

Step 1: Behaviour Changes That Retrain Your Feed

1. Turn autoplay off temporarily
Autoplay removes natural stopping points.
Especially helpful if your feed feels off-track.

2. Use search instead of the homepage
Search = intention
Homepage = past habits

3. Watch long-form content fully
Conversations over clips
Context over commentary
Depth retrains YouTube faster than volume.

4. End sessions intentionally
The final video sets the tone for next time.
Choose it carefully.

Step 2: A 5-Minute YouTube Settings Reset

Settings → History & Privacy

  • Pause Watch History for a week
  • Clear recent history
  • Turn Autoplay offSettings → Notifications
    Disable:
  • Recommended video alerts

A Formation Question For You

Am I leaving YouTube more thoughtful — or more reactive? YouTube becomes what you make it.
