Retrain Instagram: Escape the Highlight Reel & Comparison

Instagram rarely makes us angry. It does something quieter. It trains comparison. A steady stream of curated lives can leave us subtly dissatisfied with our own — even when nothing is actually wrong. If Instagram leaves you feeling behind, restless, or quietly discontent, you’re not imagining it. And you can change it.

How Instagram’s Algorithm Learns

Instagram prioritizes:

  • What you linger on
  • What you save
  • What you share
  • Private engagement (DMs)

Likes matter less than depth. Saves and shares matter far more.

Step 1: Behaviour Changes That Retrain Your Feed

1. Stop sharing content “ironically”

Sharing to mock or vent still trains the algorithm.
Instagram can’t read tone. Only behavior.

2. Save what you want shaping you/em>

Start saving:

  • Thoughtful reflections
  • Scripture or prayer content
  • Mental health and leadership wisdom

Saves signal, “More of this.”

3. Mute stories that trigger comparison

Stories feel personal, which makes them powerful.
If someone’s stories consistently leave you feeling:

  • Less grateful
  • More anxious
  • Quietly inadequate

Mute them.
Muting is stewardship, not rejection.

4. Engage deeply with fewer accounts

Comment thoughtfully. Send encouraging DMs. Move slower.
Depth retrains the algorithm better than volume.

Step 2: A 5-Minute Instagram Settings Reset

Content Preferences
Settings → Content Preferences

  • Set Sensitive Content to Less
  • Snooze Suggested Posts where available

Hidden Words
Settings → Hidden Words
Turn on offensive word filtering
Add custom words that trigger envy or shame

Notifications
Settings → Notifications
Turn off:

  • Suggested posts
  • “You might like” alerts

A Formation Question For You

After time on Instagram, do I feel more grateful — or more discontent?
Instagram doesn’t shout. It whispers. Train it carefully.
