Why You Can Trust God in a Changing World

With the rise of COVID-19, you suddenly live in a world of change and fear, and if you’re honest, it’s overwhelming.

Throughout time, our world is always changing, becoming, and evolving. Sometimes it’s becoming better, but these days it can feel like it’s becoming worse. Think of your own life. You are becoming older. Hopefully, we are becoming kinder. Maybe you are becoming better at a skill or as a friend. Maybe you are becoming worse.

Our world is in a constant state of becoming. It’s always changing. These days, it’s becoming more overwhelming and even more unknown. We’re in a storm, and the waves are getting higher.

So what difference does God make in a changing world that’s becoming scarier? Why trust Him? What makes Him trustworthy anyway?

One important characteristic of God is that in a world that’s constantly becoming, He isn’t becoming anything. Why? Because God just IS. In a world that’s constantly changing, God doesn’t change. He has always been here, and He will always be here.

When I was a kid, we had a number of stone fences by our house. Sometimes we’d hide things in the fence — toys, notes, candy. You always wanted to hide it next to the biggest rock. That rock that wouldn’t move no matter what happened. It would never change its position.

Philosophers and theologians refer to the immutability of God.

He doesn’t mutate. He’s not becoming anything. He already IS. In fact, in the Old Testament, God is sometimes referred to as “I AM.” He says to Moses from a burning bush, “I AM who I AM.” (Exodus 3:14)

The writer of Hebrews says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever”  (Hebrews 13:8).

Now, that doesn’t mean God isn’t active. Scripture clearly demonstrates that He is living and active and that even if you don’t see Him, he is working. However, His character doesn’t change.

No matter what happens in our world and in your life, no matter how you feel, here’s what is true:

God is always love.

God is always powerful.

God is always present.

God is always faithful.

God is always in control.

Can you know why the world is changing? Probably not. Have things in your life changed unexpectedly? They have. Do you know when this is all going to be over? You don’t, and it looks like it could be awhile.

But here is what you do know:

God is still in control. He is still powerful. He is still loving. He won’t change. And no matter what happens, you can keep putting confidence in Him. You can anchor yourself to Him in the waves.

Throughout history, our world has faced all types of challenges that have brought changes, impacted lives, and resulted in heartbreak and triumph. But through it all, God has never changed.

He is the rock that cannot be moved. You can count on it.
