When a Pink iPod Just Isn’t Enough Anymore

By Sydney Lester, Student Ministry Coordinator at Connexus Church

Have you ever wanted something really, really badly? For me, I can remember wanting a first-generation pink iPod nano with every fiber of my being …

Well, Christmas of 2007 rolled around, and “Santa” brought me that beautiful, bright pink iPod nano. I loved that iPod so much … until the next generation came out and my thinking changed.

I was disappointed that I didn’t have the next greatest Apple invention, and angry when all of my friends were getting theirs the next Christmas, while I wasn’t. Looking back on that experience, I can see that this was my first encounter with an idol.

I think we can all relate to thinking that something, or someone, will bring us the most joy in life, but this isn’t often the case. With my iPod nano, it brought me joy for a short period of time but that joy faded very quickly.

What if there was a relationship that could change the way we felt about things like pink iPod nanos? Would you be willing to pursue that relationship?

Join me this Sunday as we talk about how this relationship could be so much more significant than anything on this earth.

Nothing touches us more deeply than the relationships we have with those closest to us. No human bond is stronger than the love for a family member or close friend. They are also the ones who can hurt and disappoint us the most. Why is it that these loving relationships fall apart? How can we love someone so much, only to have that love fade? How come families move from a place of love to disappointment so quickly?

Ever notice that what you think will satisfy doesn’t? Money, success, homes, relationships and even family often promise more than the seem to deliver. You always want more. Why? This week, we’ll introduce you to how idols–even sophisticated idols—work, and why elevating the gift God gives you above the Giver always disappoints.
