An Unprecedented Weekend Coming Up

Man, a lot of us here at Connexus are getting excited about this coming weekend. We are synchronizing our campuses this weekend for a single weekend that will kick off seven days of prayer and fasting. Yup, you read it right – prayer and fasting. Before that begins to sound too crazy, let me explain.

As we are heading into yet another busy fall, we began to wonder what it would be like to pause as a community to pray and fast together. It’s so easy just to jump into the fall at school, work and church without reflecting on what is most important. So we got this idea: what if we prayed and fasted together?

Usually when followers of Jesus fast and pray, it’s about the things that break our hearts. Something bad happens, or we need direction, so we fast and pray. But some of the most significant instances of fasting in all of scripture happen not when we pray over the things that break our hearts, but when people stopped to fast and pray over the things that break God’s heart. That’s what we want to do. We want to make sure our hearts break over the things that break God’s heart. We’re calling this service on Sunday “Heart Break”.

Here’s what’s up. On Sunday, I’ll bring a message on prayer and fasting to both congregations at our services. We’ll celebrate communion together, worship together and then launch this seven day journey.

Then, we’ll invite you to consider praying and fasting over the next seven days. We won’t ask everyone to give up food, but we will ask people to consider fasting something (coffee, dessert, electronics – something you’ll miss). We’ll pass out (and post on line) a seven day study guide for the next week. We’re even going to try to get each congregation to pray for everyone in each city by name during those seven days.

Then during the week, Rich Birch and I will be leading guided prayer times each morning in various spots in Barrie and Orillia. And, we’ll be sharing our experiences and want you to share your experiences together over the blog next week.

The purpose? As we head into the fall, we want our hearts to break more over the things that break God’s heart. Plain and simple. We want our hearts to break for the people in our community.

It all starts Sunday at 8:30 and 10:00 at both campuses. And we’re already praying for God to move in a significant way not only in our lives, but in the life of our community. You excited yet? Scared a bit? Anxious? Curious? We are, and we can’t wait!
