On the Outside Looking In

Brantford is my hometown; it's also home to the 4th oldest golf course in North America. It's a beautiful “private” course that I have walked, biked or driven by hundreds of times over the years, always with a strong desire to play but also with an understanding that I wasn't welcome. Of course I wasn't welcome, because I didn't have the resources to be a member, to get on the inside.
Well, last Saturday I finally played that same course. A friend of mine became a member this year and invited me as his guest. It was a great experience. These “high end” courses are just different. From the type of cars in the parking lot to the way golfers dress; they look, talk and walk like they have lots of money. I must have snowed them pretty good. To be honest, I felt intimidated. I've played a lot of golf courses but few like this one. It took a few holes just to get comfortable but at the end of the day even though I didn't score well (my friend is a scratch golfer-that means he's really good). I loved the experience because I was with my friend and I met some new people who were fun to be around. So even though I was a little nervous at the beginning, even thinking to myself, “man, not sure I belong here”, the day turned out to be an awesome experience.
Next month, Connexus is offering GroupLink in Barrie and Orillia; this is a 2-hour event to help people get connected with others into a small group. The major difference between GroupLink and the Brantford Golf and Country Club, is everyone is welcome. Doesn't matter your income, your age or how you dress.

Is it possible that you've been attending Connexus for a while, maybe months, even years, yet you feel like an outsider still looking in? It's our hope that GroupLink will change all that. So even if you've passed by GroupLink before, never sure whether you should go in, or if you're welcome, let me assure you, you are! You may feel awkward at first, just as I was on the first tee with eyes all on me. All I can say is, the awkwardness was well worth it in the end because I had a great day on the course. We will do all we can to ensure that you have a great experience at GroupLink too; it'll be worth it!

GroupLink; it's not for a select few, it's for everyone and we'd love to see you there. Our Barrie GroupLink is Friday September 23 at 7pm. It will be held at the Holiday Inn on Fairview Rd off Essa. Our Orillia GroupLink is Friday Sept 30 at 7pm at the Best Western on Memorial Dr.

I hope to see you there!
