What We Believe: About Humanity

This week as we callibrate our own opinions and beliefs about the Christian faith against what many Christians hold true about Christianity, here’s what we believe about humanity:

We believe that mankind was created in the image of God to have fellowship with Him but became alienated in that relationship through sinful disobedience. As a result, man is incapable of regaining a right relationship with God through his own effort alone.

Now this is where it gets fun, because it gets helpful.  As we shared in the message, our goal in this series is to see the truth help you enter into a relationship with God or make progress in your relationship with God.

So check this:  how much of your relationship with God is spent trying to get a right standing with God through your personal effort?  You know the drill: well, I blew that last night so today I’m going to do X and maybe that will make up for things.  Maybe God will take a more favourable view then.

But we don’t actually believe that our efforts can make our relationship with God right.  Jesus made it right.  So we don’t do good works in order to get right with God, rather they’re a response of gratitude because we’ve been made right with God.  See the difference?

What difference would living that truth make in your life?  Why do you think we’re always trying to ‘buy’ a right relationship with God through good deeds?
