Welcome to Day 20 of the 24 Day Devotion. So glad you’re joining us! Each day for 24 days as a church, we’re going to read one chapter of the Gospel of Luke and post a devotion on it.
If you’ve never read the Bible, we’re so glad you’re joining us. And if you read the Bible, we hope this helps you grow in your faith.
Need to catch up? Start at Luke 1 – Is The New Testament A Lie? and follow along. Today’s devotion is below.
READ Luke 20
There is something powerful that stands out to me in this chapter. Something I’ve been thinking about a lot in the last couple years.
Because in the last couple years, I’ve lost friends and family. I have loved ones facing terminal diagnosis. And I can’t reconcile it. It’s never fair, it never makes sense, it never seems right.
I’m sure you can relate.
Because at one point or another, we all face it. Death.
Jesus’ life, his parables, his teaching about the Kingdom of Heaven and ultimately (spoiler alert!) the way he himself conquers death – changes everything about it.
Around this time last year, I sat at my 98 year old grandmother’s bedside. Her last breath was coming, we just never knew which one it would be.
At 98, she lived a long, full and faith-filled life. It was normal and natural for her to die. But it felt so wrong.
Holding her hand, tears stinging my eyes, why was it so difficult to say goodbye? Why is death so difficult?
Jesus said “Those worthy of being raised from the dead… will never die again.” and God is “a God of the living, not of the dead.”
Jesus believes in eternal life! Jesus believes humans can have eternal life… Jesus gives eternal life!
Resurrection is reality to Jesus.
What occurred to me as I watched my grandmother go from this life to the next was…
We were made for eternity. We were made for eternal relationships. With God and with others.
Relationships that never die. No goodbyes at 98. No goodbyes ever.
Because Jesus conquers death and his reality is resurrection.
Jesus is our one true, solid foundation of hope and love that nothing can separate us from.
He is a God of the living!
Do you believe that today?
You were made for eternity. Resurrection is reality.
Is this a hard truth for you to grasp or understand?
How would you live differently today if you believed that God is a God of the living, and that those who are raised from the dead will never die again?
Those are big promises. If you struggle to grasp these promises, do you think it’s worth exploring more? Why or why not?
If you believe these promises, but you don’t live like they are true, what needs to change?
Through our surrender to Jesus as Lord and Saviour of our lives, he opens eternity to us. Maybe it’s time to embrace that today.
Lord God, you created me – heart, mind, body and soul. You know me inside and out. You are a God of the living, and I want to live. I need you, I declare my dependance on you today.
Jesus, I ask your forgiveness for the ways I have sinned by hurting myself, hurting others and hurting you. I want to be alive in You, not just in this life but for eternity. You are my one solid hope and foundation in this life that nothing can separate me from.
Thank you for the love you pour out in Jesus, help me to see the reality of what Christ did for me and live in the truth of it, today.
Jesus, I declare you my Lord and my Saviour. Amen.
